According to the New York Times, Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple Inc) addressed the recording industries stating that Apple would support the removal of DRM (Copy Protection) on music. This is of course a risky thing considering that Apple is the head of the iPod and iTunes Store.
I think DRM only hurts honest users. Pirates are uneffected by DRM, and many honest users are forced to break the law by removing DRM to put on their own devices. I’m glad that Jobs is pushing for this. Movement like this has been going on for a while, both by users and organizations. One such organization is “Defective by Design”. Personally I think they are little too zealous so I see Apple’s support as a major step.
What does Jason Reindorp the marketing director for the Zune say? “Irresponsible, or at the very least naïve, It’s like he’s on top of the mountain making pronouncements, while we’re here on the ground working with the industry to make it happen.”
Hm. Big surprise.
“Microsoft’s own antivirus software, Live OneCare, is unable to fully protect Vista users against viruses, and one of security firm McAfee’s antivirus software packages also fails to protect users, according to independent research released Friday.”
It seems that Microsoft’s own OneCare virus scanner along with four others including McAfee Enterprise failed Virus Bulletin’s test.
WAY TO GO. We can’t completely blame Microsoft and McAfee though. They did stop 99% of the threats. Of course that’s still a lot of bad software that remain as threats. It would seem that you’ld be better off with a less known virus scanner such as NOD32 or AVG. Of course, you could go Linux or Mac.
